Blessing of Animals The annual blessing Animals will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 2. English (ESOL) Classes Jean Cook, an experienced ESOL teacher, has begun offering classes at St. Francis. The current session has ended, but a new session will run from September 22 - November 1. Classes are on Monday and Wednesday from 6:15-7:15 for beginners and 7:15-8:15 for intermediate and advanced. Jean will be away for the winter months, with the next following session to begin in May, She is looking for someone who would be willing and able to conduct a winter session. Life Chain is a peaceful, prayerful, public witness of pro-life Americans standing in unity for one hour, praying for our nation and for an end to abortion. It is a visual statement of solidarity by our community that abortion kills children and that we support the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception. Rain or shine, we will meet a bit before 2 p.m. at the designated parking areas before positioning ourselves along Highways 515/76 & 129. Food Pantry Weekend Next weekend is our monthly collection for the Ecumenical Food Pantry, which serves the needy in Towns and Union Counties. Suggested donations include non-perishable food, such as canned vegetables, fruits, soups, pasta sauce, meats, beans, jelly, peanut butter, evaporated milk. Or dry foods, such as rice, pasta, cereal, crackers. The Ecumenical Pantry is one of the few pantries that also provides personal hygiene and household cleaners including: Deodorants, soaps, shampoo, dental care, laundry and dish soap. These items are greatly appreciated by the needy. Donations can be left in the old kitchen area off the vestibule after any weekday or weekend Mass. Jesus, The Way, The Truth, and the Life Our new bible study begins on Monday, October 11th, There will be 2 sessions each Monday: 10AM in person, and a 7PM virtual meeting. Books for this study may be purchased online at Amazon.com. The cost is $ The title is "Jesus, the Way, the Truth, and the Life" by Marcellino D'Ambrosio. Signing up for this Bible study will help us to determine the amount of space needed for the in person class. Please contact the Faith Formation office with any questions. Bereavement Ministry With the death of your spouse or loved one, your world has radically changed. You may feel grateful that they are not suffering now, overwhelmed with all that there is left to do, feeling guilty, or feeling abandoned or alone. Grief is the first step in healing. There is Hope! Learning how to cope is the beginning and moving forward with special memories brings peace and consolation. God does not abandon His people; Come to me all you who labor and are burdened and I will give you rest. The Bereavement / Ministry of Consolation will be facilitating a Bereavement Support Group for anyone suffering some stage of mourning or grief. It is a time for hope and learning about ways to discover new meaning after the death of a loved one. If you are interested in participating in this 10 week session, a support group will begin October 7th at St. Francis. Georgia Bulletin The Georgia Bulletin is the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Subscriptions are submitted for parishioners, upon request, by the parish office. We currently have 279 individuals/families who receive the Bulletin. The cost to the parish for each subscription is $14, for an annual cost to the parish of almost $4,000. We will be updating our list of subscriptions in the next two weeks. During his youth, Wenceslaus received a strong religious education from his father and grandmother, Ludmilla. His mother never accepted the Catholic faith and turned against it entirely upon the death of her husband. She purged Catholics from public office, closed churches, and preventing all teaching of the faith. Ludmilla urged Wenceslaus to seize power from his mother and defend their faith. His attempt to do so divided the country into two halves: one ruled by Wenceslaus advised by Ludmilla; the other ruled by Wenceslaus' younger brother Boleslaus, who hated the Church. Wenceslaus fortified himself in this struggle through fervent prayer, extreme asceticism, charitable service, and a vow of chastity. Meanwhile, his mother carried out a plot to kill Ludmilla, having her strangled in her private chapel. Wenceslaus also faced the threat of invasion from abroad, when Prince Radislaus of Gurima demanded that Bohemia submit to his rule. When Wenceslaus sought to avoid a war by challenging him in single combat, two angels are said to have appeared, deflecting the javelin thrown at Wenceslaus and immediately inspiring Radislaus to drop to his knees in surrender. The Holy Roman Emperor Otto I, who also conferred on him the title of King Wenceslaus. Wenceslaus' brother sought to appear as a peacemaker, inviting the king to his realm for a celebration. When Wenceslaus was praying in a chapel during the visit, Boleslaus' henchmen attacked and wounded him. Boleslaus himself delivered the final blow, killing his brother by running him through with a lance. St. Wenceslaus died on Sept. 28, 935. Emperor Otto responded to St. Wenceslaus' death by invading Bohemia and making war against Boleslaus for several years. He succeeded in conquering the region, and forced Boleslaus to reverse the anti-catholic measures he and his mother had taken. Boleslaus came to regret his sin when he learned of the miracles that were taking place at his brother's tomb. He moved St. Wenceslaus' body to a cathedral for veneration by the faithful.
