H, MA Fr. Ron s Ramblings Today as we gather we celebrate the wonderful Feast of the Epiphany. Every year as we recall the great story of the three Magi arriving from the east, we not only enter their journey following a star and coming to the place where the savior has been born, but we pause to reflect upon the journey of faith each one of us is on. Like those wise Men of old, we too have our ups and downs; some days that star shines brightly and we are certain of the direction of our lives; other times, it is cloudy and dark and we are at a loss as to where we must go. When those times happen we simply need to remain persistent and know that the guiding light will return! I think this is good advice as we head into a new year and the great unknown that stretches before us. This afternoon (Sunday) we will bring another Christmas celebration to completion with the annual Carol Sing. Each year a large number of people come together to celebrate this tradition. All of course are welcome at 3 p.. this afternoon in the upper church. I also want to extend very warm welcome to Fr. Ron St. Pierre who will be with you for the length of my recovery from hip surgery. I am also grateful to so many of you who have offered me support and your own experience with hip replacement surgery. Please keep me in your prayers over the next several weeks as I embrace the world of physical therapy! **PARISH CENTER HOURS** Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday 9:00am3:00pm Parish Office will be closed on Monday, January 16th for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Children of God to be Remembered in January Richard Albertini, Sharon Albertini, Preston Garrett Cote, Kevin Gilchrist, Kathy Lanni, Paul W. Pena, Freddie Ramig, Shawn Taylor, Dana Young, William Wolkovich, Brenda Bowker Flaherty, Jonathan Perkins, Edward J. Figueiro Hoje Domingo dia 8 de Janeiro estamos celebrando a maravilhosa festa da Epifania. T ADULT FAITH FORMATION At the end of Advent and Christmas Time, the Scriptures take us from the humble, local event of the Messiah s birth to a celebration of the universal effects of God s breaking through into human history. Pilgrimages, processions, journeys, and exotic visitors all converge in the glorious light of the Lord, who has come to dwell in time for all peoples. Isaiah summons the city of Jerusalem to rejoice in the glory of the Lord. While other peoples dwell in darkness, the people of God walk in the radiance of the Lord. Furthermore, Jerusalem will be the bearer and sign of God s glory to those nations; caravans will stream toward the light, bearing riches and proclaiming the praises of the Lorda glorious vision! The psalmist asks a blessing from God upon the Israelite king, who will be God s representative. This earthly ruler needs the people s prayers so that he can rule with God s justice and righteousness from sea to sea, and to the very ends of the earth. Through him, God will reign; he will care for the lowly and the poor, as God would. Paul s teaching also stresses that God s reign is widespread, even universal. The Gentiles are coheirs of the same revelation given to Paul and the Apostles. Indeed, they become copartners in the Gospel. The Spirit has made them members of the same body and commissioned them for the same ministry. The details of the Magi s visit intrigue us. The visitors names and occupations, the symbolism of the gifts, and the evil intentions of Herod lend drama and mystery to the story. But we need to focus on the Gospel as an epiphany, a manifestation of God s intervention in the world. These foreigners are a sign of the farreaching effect of the birth of the Son of God. All peoples of good will find their way to the Lord. What roles does the idea of gift play in the readings today? How do you understand the spiritual nature of the journey in the readings? Taken from At Home with the Word 2017 published by LTP 5 JANUARY IS SUBSTANCE ABUSE AWARENESS MONTH Statistically 1 in 5 teens have abused prescription medication, some of these children between the ages of 1115. These children have a greater risk of developing an addiction when they are adults. Teen drug abuse can have long term cognitive and behavioral effects since the teenage brain is still developing. Recognition and prevention of drug use can end an emerging problem before it starts. Setting a good example and having talks about drug use are strong tools for teenage substance abuse prevention. Teen drug experimentation plays the biggest role in teenage drug use. This is a fact of life and just because a teen has tried drugs or alcohol doesn t mean they will become an addict. It is important to understand why some teens are tempted to experiment. They are curious, under stress, have emotional struggles, a desire to escape from present situation and most importantly PEER PRESSURE. Common drugs that teens abuse are alcohol, Marijuana, and prescription and overthe counter Medications. There are many signs that a teen is using drugs. It can be difficult to tell the difference between the pangs of adolescence and actual drug use, but parents can be proactive in talking to their teen to find out what is going on. One in five parents who suspect their teen is using drugs do no intervene to prevent further drug use. Responding to a teen s admittance or denial of drug use in the right way is just as important as asking the right question. Parents shouldn t overreact if their teen comes clean about using drugs. Parents should explain how they care about their child and the child s future. Teens who are supported and loved are also more likely to stop experimenting with drugs or seek help if they have an addiction. Many teens have a tough time dealing with sadness or other stresses common during adolescence. It is understandable that they may think having a drink or a little marijuana can offer relief. The best way to deal with stress, however, is to seek emotional support or find someone to talk to. There are treatment centers designated for teens that target the emotional and social issues that led to their drug use. 1 in 3 parents believe there is little they can do to prevent teen drug use despite evidence that shows parental involvement is the strongest factor in prevention. Don t go through the process of recovery alone. There are people who can help you with the struggles you are facing. Sunday Throughout The Week Sharing the Gospel When Jesus was born, angels sang. I'll bet you never thought stars could sing for Jesus, too. But the stars in the sky sang in their own way, just by moving and twinkling in the sky. The Savior was born. Jesus was the King that God's people had been waiting for. Magi who had been watching the sky saw a star much brighter than the rest. They followed that star until they found Jesus, and they worshipped their new king. Prayer Dear God, thank you for making the stars move and twinkle in a special way, so that the Magi could find Jesus. Something to Draw Draw a picture of the Magi following the brightest star. Mission for the Week Ask your family if you can visit a planetarium, or look through a special telescope, so you can see the stars God made. 6
