Tom Murphy s devoted ministry in our community as we prayed for the peaceful consolaon of his soul in the presence of our Lord. Thank you to everyone who organized and parcipated in this important event. The Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time What do you wish me to do for you? Whether we realize it, this is a queson God is always asking. It s an important queson because the answer we provide will reveal a great deal about where our hearts lie. Our requests of God can oen appear very noble and altruisc. They consist of requests for healing for someone in need of prayers, successful resoluon of a personal conflict, assistance in overcoming a disease and myriad other desires for both ourselves and others. We are especially concerned about those we love and can easily find ourselves bringing their struggles to God for a hearing in our prayer. Is that really all that prayer is about? The woman in today s Gospel, having been put in her place by Jesus, was only looking out for the wellbeing of her sons. She was doing what mothers do, protecng and securing the livelihood of her children. But she was sadly mistaken, her request was not granted. We all make this same misguided mistake from me to me. The goal of prayer is not to convince God of the worthiness of our agenda or to gain a hearing. Somemes we believe that the more we mulply our prayers or discover the right combinaon of supplicaons that we will receive more of God s aenon. That s not how it works. Even though God desires to hear, know, and be an inmate part of what is on our minds, it goes much deeper. What we need from God is a relaonship. It s a relaonship that guides and immerses us in the very stuff of life and in the direcon of the Gospel. This relaonship sees God s kingdom and agenda, not our own, as what is most important. It builds the strength of character necessary to bring God s Gospel into a world that may not receive it with open arms. It may cause us discomfort and suffering. We are asked to heroically journey with God through suffering, hardship, ridicule, and even death! Ulmately, our desire from God must become our desire for God. It is only when this happens that the powerful words thy will be done will be found with sincerity and humility on our lips. Whatever God wishes becomes what we wish as we see this glorious union of wills. Our humble lives will then become powerful witnesses, and what happens to us in God s eternal kingdom the result of his mercy. We become true servants and find ourselves discovering God s definion of success. That definion has nothing at all to do with status, income, or privilege. OCTOBER 17, 2021 SOCIAL JUSTICE & PEACE Bread for the World Fall Offering of Leers October is the month that we tradionally send our Fall Bread For The World Offering Of Leers to our US Senators and Congressmen/woman, asking that they connue to support legislaon to alleviate hunger in the US and the rest of the world. And once again this fall we will ask you to send these leers via email through the bread.org website. The current COVID pandemic has and a detrimental effect on world hunger in many ways, negang some of the gains that had been made in the decades prior. The stascs are sobering. According to Bread for the World: In the U.S., hunger is not caused by a scarcity of food, but rather the connued prevalence of poverty. Although we live in the world's wealthiest naon, more than 40 million Americans, including 12 million children, live in households that struggle to put food on the table. Further, more than one in seven people in the U.S. lives below the poverty line, an income of $22,113 for a family of four in 2010. Outside the U.S., many people suffer from hunger and poverty. Nearly 1.2 billion people in developing countries live in extreme poverty, living on less than $1.25 a day. The vast majority of the world's hungry people live in developing countries, where 13.5 percent of the populaon is undernourished. You can have an impact on alleviang global poverty and hunger just by taking a few minutes of your me, going on the bread.org website, following the prompts to Take Acon, filling out your name, address and email address, and sending an email leer to our Senators and Congresswoman, urging them to support current legislaon to increase funding for global nutrion programs. Please parcipate in the Bread for the World Fall Offering of Leers and indicate on the leer that you are a member of All Saints Parish. Thank you. THE TWENTY NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ADULT FAITH FORMATION What s life all about? To find clues as to the meaning of life, we first look at ourselves. Who am I? Please visit the Children s Faith Formaon page of the All Saints Parish website for more informaon about the 20212022 Faith Formaon year. Sharing the Gospel: Do you ever catch yourself being bossy? That is a mistake grownups make, too. It is no fun to work or play with bossy people. They don't honor God when they order people around. In today's Gospel, Jesus told his friends to be kind, not bossy. God wants us to help and serve other people. Prayer: Dear God, when I want to get my own way, help me to stop. Show me ways I can help other people instead. Mission for the Week: Invite a friend over to visit, and think of ways to serve her. Hang up her jacket, offer her something to eat, and ask her what she would like to do. Share your best toys with her, and let her have the first turn. May 31, 2021 Thursday, June 24, 2021 5

A Day of Reflection for Maine High School Youth Set for Bangor, Brunswick, and Presque Isle Days of reflection for high school youth in Maine to relate, pray, receive, and witness will be held in Bangor, Brunswick, and Presque Isle this fall. Fr. Ford and the 7 th & 8 th Graders We have had a lot of confusion regarding what to do about student work while a student is out quarantining due to close contact. The school is not legally able to tell teachers who tested positive for COVID. We may let teachers know of extended absences, but teachers don't know when a student is sick versus when they're on quarantine. If your child is going to be out, PLEASE reach out to your child's teachers for clarity on what should be accomplished while the student is out. We are happy to make arrangements for pickup of your child's computer and necessary materials for quarantine situations. Our teachers (particularly middle school) have had multiple students out on quarantine, all with different return dates, and it's been chaotic to try to teach their normal days as well as reach out to absent students. If parents could do the reaching out to let teachers know of the situation, it would be much appreciated! Thank you! 6 Open Enrollment 2021-2022 Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8 Please see our website sjcsbme.org to inquire and apply, or call 207-725-5507 today to schedule a tour or get more information!
