Spring A Time of Change How s your Lent going? This question was raised frequently in my homilies this year. As nature provided us a dramatic turnover from the dead of winter (Ash Wednesday) to approaching the new life of spring (Easter). Anxiously, we ve longed for those signs of spring. Change is in the air, on the land, and surrounding us with the freshness of new life. In our Diocese this is also the time of change; priests retiring (or reaching senior status 70 years) and the consequences of movement in pastoral assignments by the Bishop. Having the privilege of benefiting from Fr. Jon Thorsen s first years of ministry with us, we are happy that he will be getting a parish of his own in Chilton. Don t worry, the Diocese is replacing his position with another Parochial Vicar, Fr. John Katamba, who has been pastor to parishes in Oneida. Also, a new pastor will be coming to serve St. Bernadette & Sacred Heart. He is currently Rector of St. Francis Xavier Cathedral Fr. Joseph Dorner. We can t do much better than that! I will be moving on to two smaller, rural parishes, St. Mary Black Creek and St. Lawrence Navarino. In the Bible, (7) is the perfect number. I ve had 14 wonderful years here at St. Bernadette. The last seven years with Parochial Vicars helping, also at Sacred Heart. It s time to step aside to give these parishes the opportunity to grow under new leadership. Just in the last few years, St. Bernadette and Sacred Heart have made many new advances and initiatives, most notable in parishioners embracing the Alpha course, new outreach programs, and the repurposing of campus buildings. Visioning work by our Parish & Finance Councils and Trustees have significantly contributed to these initiatives. I am sure everyone will embrace and welcome your new pastoral leaders Fr. Joe Dorner and Fr. John Katamba, as you have welcomed the parade of Parochial Vicars we ve had in the last few years. The changes do not take effect until July 1. So we will have several months to prepare for our leave-taking and welcome of our new priests. Thank you for all the prayers and support over the years! Please pray for new vocations so our parishes here and throughout the Diocese can continue to thrive, growing spiritual relationships with Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Fr. Eucharistic Assistance If you are unable to come forward to receive the Eucharist, a Eucharistic Minister will come to bring Holy Communion to you at the start of the distribution of the Eucharist.
